Tallapaka Annamacharya was a Hindu saint and musician who lived during the 15th century. He is known for composing songs called sankirtanas in praise of Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu, making him the earliest known Indian musician to do so. His keertana songs strongly influenced the structure of Carnatic music compositions, and they remain popular among Carnatic music concert artists. Annamacharya is regarded as a great devotee of Vishnu, and his saintly life is honored by devotees and saintly singers. He was born into a Smarta tradition Brahmin family but later became a Vaishnava in the Ramanujacharya Sampradaya. His wife, Timmakka, was the first female poet in Telugu literature and their son and grandson were also composers and poets. Annamacharya lived to be 95 years old, passing away on April 4, 1503. He is widely considered the Andhra Pada kavitā Pitāmaha (Grandfather of Telugu song-writing) and is believed to have been the avatar of Nandaka, the sword of Vishnu.Annamacharya is remembered for his saintly life, and is honoured as a great devotee of Vishnu by devotees and saintly singers. He composed as many as 32,000 Sankeertanas on the praise of lord Venkateswara, of which only about 12,000 are available today. His compositions were forgotten for over three centuries but were later found engraved on copper plates hidden inside the Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has been endeavoring to preserve the rich heritage of his compositions. In 1994, a Bharathanatyam dance production titled "Annamaiyah" was produced as a tribute to the divine composer and went on to become a sensational hit, staging over 400 times till now
