About

Swami Chandrasekhara Bharati, born Narasimha Sastri, was the Jagadguru Sankaracarya of Sringeri Sharada Peetham from 1912 to 1954. He was a highly significant spiritual figure in Hinduism during the 20th century and was believed to be a Jivanmukta, which is Sanskrit for one liberated while alive. He spent his childhood in Sringeri, was an introvert and was regular in performing Sandhyavandanam three times a day and Agnikarya twice a day. He moved to Sadvidya Sanjivini Pathasala in Sringeri at the age of 12 and then went on to study Purva Mimamsa and Vedanta at Bharatiya Girvana Prouda Vidya Vardhini Shala in Bangalore, an institution of higher Vedantic training established by the Sankaracarya of Sringeri in 1910. He took Sannyasa in 1912 and was initiated into it by Swami Satyananda Sarasvati and given the yoga patta of Swami Chandrasekhara Bharati. He was ordained in the dashanami tradition of Adi Shankaracharya. In 1916, he performed the Kumbhabhishekam of the Sharada Temple in Sringeri, and in 1924, he left on his first Digvijayam. After his return to Sringeri, he assumed the Avadhuta Sthiti and named his successor, Srinivasa Sastri, to enable himself to spend more time in meditation and contemplation of the Self.
